How to change the email address associated with the Microsoft account
Change the email address of your Microsoft account
Log in to your Microsoft account to change the email address associated with your account.
You can change the email address (called "account alias") that you use to log in to your Microsoft account for any of the following reasons:
You have changed your email provider.
You have changed your name or the way you want them to address you.
You want to use an email address that you remember more easily.
You prefer to use your phone number to log in (available on Xbox One, Xbox.com or account.microsoft.com).
Follow the steps on this page to change the email address of your Microsoft account or the phone number you use to log in.
Important Before you start, you have to know the email address and password you used to set up your Microsoft account. If you do not know what they are, check the Solution for lost account or the Solution for lost password.
How to change the email address or phone number you use to log in to your Microsoft online account.
Step 1: Add a new email address or phone number.
Log in to your Microsoft account.
Select Your information at the top of the page.
Select Manage how to sign in to Microsoft.
You may be asked to enter your password again or enter a code that we send to the email address or phone number stored in your account as security information. This way we will know that you are the one who sends us the request.
Select Add email or Add phone number.
Note If you see the message "For security reasons, you must verify your primary alias before adding another alias" at the bottom of the page, you will have to Verify your current main alias or select Rename. If you select Rename, go to the "How to change the name of an unverified primary alias" section
If you have selected Add mail, follow these steps. If not, go to step 7 and add a phone number.
If you want to create a new email address to use, select Create a new email address and add it as an alias and follow the instructions.
If you have a non-Microsoft email address (such as an address @ gmail.com or @ yahoo.com) that you want to use, select Add an existing email address as a Microsoft account alias and click Add Alias.
When you add an existing email address, you will be asked to verify that you are the owner of the account. To the right of the added alias, click on Verify, and we will send a message to that address to get confirmation.
When you receive the verification email, click on the link provided to verify that you are the owner of the account.
Note The indicated email address can no longer be used as a Microsoft account alias.
If you have selected Add phone number, follow these steps:
Select your country or region in the list.
Enter the phone number you want to use and select Next.
By adding a new phone number we will send a text message to that number to verify it. Enter the code in the text message and select Next.
Step 2: Set the email address as your primary alias.
After adding the new email address, you will have to configure it as the main alias to be displayed when you log in to all devices and services. These are the steps:
On the Manage Account Aliases page, select Make Parent under the email address you want to have as the primary name under Account Alias.
Note Only email addresses can be used as the primary alias.
Step 3: Remove the old email address that you no longer want to use to log in
Note If you decide to remove an alias using a Microsoft domain such as @ hotmail.com, @ outlook.com or @ live.com, that alias will be completely removed and you will not be able to log in to any Microsoft service.
To remove the email address that you no longer use to log in to your account, select Remove next to the alias in the Manage account aliases page and follow the instructions provided.
Important Do not remove this email address if you want to continue using it to send and receive email messages.
How to change the name of an unverified primary alias
If you have not been able to verify the primary alias, select the Rename option next to the alias in the main Manage page, how to log in to Microsoft.
Select if you prefer Use an existing alias or Use a different alias.
If you have a proven alias that you would like to set as primary, select Use an existing alias and choose the desired email address from the menu. Otherwise, go to step 4 to add or create a new one.
If you select Use a different alias, follow these steps:
If you want to create a new email address to use, select Create a new email address as your primary alias and click Rename main alias.
If you have a non-Microsoft email address (such as an address @ gmail.com or @ yahoo.com) that you want to use, select Use an existing email address as the primary alias and click Rename main alias .
When you add an existing email address, you will be redirected to the Verify email page page to verify that you are the owner of that account. We will send you a message with a security code to that email address to get confirmation.
When you receive the verification message, type the security code provided in the field and click Verify to confirm that you are the owner of the account.
Note The indicated email address can no longer be used as a Microsoft account alias.
If you do it correctly, you will see the message "You have changed the name of your main alias". In addition, the primary alias not previously verified will be replaced with the new address on the Manage How to Log On page to Microsoft.
Note This change to the email address may take up to 48 hours to be implemented in all Microsoft services. If you sign in to your Microsoft account on an Xbox One console with the Kinect sensor, you may be asked to log in manually with a remote. If after two days they still ask you to log in manually, try removing your account from the console and add it again.
You can use any email address or phone number that you have listed as an alias to log in. To make it difficult for someone to enter your account, change your login preferences to disable any alias you do not want to use to log in.
